Captain's Log

Captain's Log 7/13/2008

Date: 07-13-09

The captain’s log is back!!!  I missed our first and only perfect season going 10-0 and winning the championship but I am hoping we can repeat that performance making it an entire year of not losing any games.  We are off to a good start for the summer session beating Agave, again, in the first game 3 – 1.

The game was never in doubt even on a hot day with only 2 subs which is hard to believe since we carry about 20 players and have a waiting list at least that long.  From the opening kick off we controlled the ball and knocked it all over the field causing the other team to chase and struggle early.  It seemed like we got about 10 passes off before they got their first touch on the ball poking it out of bounce on a lunge.  The scoring opportunities came early and often and paid off to the tune of a 3 – 0 half time lead.

From my view it looked like we had such dominance in the first half because our legs were fresh and we wanted to make sure we won the game.  Once those two factors were gone we just tapered the effort.  The passes weren’t as crisp and the effort just not the same in the second half, and yet the scoring chances were still there.  An interesting comment was made at the end of the game after one firecracker dribbled the ball coast to coast accumulating in what can only be called a gentle embrace to the other goalie when any number of passes would have resulted in a goal, that maybe the stats should come off the web site.  Could it be that we are more worried about scoring goals to pad our numbers than making the correct pass and getting a sure goal?

I have an idea that might quench everyone’s need for points and encourage passing.  Why don’t we make the assists worth more than the goals?  Just something to think about . . .

I’m guilty of the stats chasing as well but I figure if I get a shut out every game then we can’t ever lose.  About 5 minutes shy of getting our first blank sheet of the young season we let up a sloppy goal.  They countered quickly off a poor decision in the mid field, chipped our back line and was one timed out of the air into the corner.  I would say given 50 chances that kid couldn’t do that again but all he needed was that one to ruin our shut out.   I don’t think anyone saw that one turning around as fast as it did and being jammed down our throat.

Overall another good start to a season and more than anything I am just happy to be back in net.  Another session of my screaming out of the back and observations via the captain’s log the next day!
