Both Firecracker Sides Start Seasons Well

Date: 04-13-09

There's always something about the spring time that brings out the best in the Firecrackers.  Maybe it's the anticipation of the season to come, maybe it's the excitement of some new boots, or perhaps it's the camaraderie of seeing old friends... Whatever it is, it's never a good thing for anyone who lines up on the other side of the pitch from us!

The Saturday team is currently 4-1, with the lone loss coming last week against a much-improved Winchester FC team.  many of the games have been nailbiters, with Firecrackers pulling out late wins.  The second half of the season looks to be just as exciting as it kicks off this Saturday.  There are 2 regular-season games left, which will decide the seeding for the playoffs.  The playoffs are then a convoluted mixture of oddly-arranged games, but if we win out, we should be able to at least maintain a share of first place.  There is currently a 3-way tie, with the Firecrackers having beaten Masters of Disaster, the MOD's having beaten Winchester, and Winchester in turn beating the Firecrackers.  All 3 teams have a difficult game remaining: for the Firecrackers and Winchester, it will be the current 2nd place team, United FC.  For MOD's, it will be Tae Kwaba, so just about anything could happen!

As to the Monday night team, they have played just 2 games for a combined total of 9 goals.  Thanks, in part, to two old faces rejoining the team--Gareth Williams and Franco Benevento.  Forward John Basanese has had to take a back role as Travis is on leave for the season, filling in the goal.

The midfield is bursting with talent, as is the defense, and the end-result really shows it.  Although the games haven't been perfect, the Firecrackers have really stepped up in the second half of both games, showing no mercy.  The same goes for the high-octane offense--as-yet, no defense has an answer for them!
