Accidents Can't Stop the
Firecrackers' Unbeaten Streak 6/20
Jeremy Basanese--special to
sjfirecrackers.com!6/21
Despite missing players and pre-game
car accidents, the Firecrackers managed to pull off a tie with a
well rounded Deportivo Agave.
The Firecrackers started the game with
no subs, as Brian Sturges and Garret Lenox sat patiently with the
police and one out of luck un-insured driver. Hearing honks and
screams from other firecrackers passing them by, Brian and Garret
could only wait for the police to settle the accident and let them
be on their way. The Firecrackers were also missing John Basanese,
Dave Ahlgren, Devin Nelson, Donnie Fugate, Dave Fugate, and Donnie
Dequine. Despite the missing players, the Firecrackers still stepped
onto the field with confidence. The overall game was very evenly
matched, with great opportunities for both sides. The Firecrackers
welcomed newcomer Travis as goalie while Garret dealt with the
police. This allowed for Garret to be a field player when he and
Brian arrived midway through the first half.

Above: Jenkins powers
towards the goal.Although
there were many opportunities, the Firecrackers were only able to
put one goal away. Midway through the first half, Josh Patton
slotted a pass through the defense to Ronnie Jenkins who punched a
low shot into the back of the net. The 'Crackers held Deportivo
Agave and went into half-time up 1-0. Halfway through a hard fought
second half, however, the Agave's were able to put one away and tie
the game at 1-1. At this point, it seemed as though Deportivo Agave
was satisfied with a tie, becuase they pulled midfielders back to
serve as extra defensemen. Constantly having 5 players back
defending caused the game to bog down in the midfield. This
defensive tactic stalled many of the Firecracker's offensive runs,
but the Firecrackers were still able to press the defense and create
scoring opportunities. The wind was also a factor in Mondays game,
at times allowing goal kicks to sail nearly the entire length of the
field. This allowed Travis to create 'breakaway' opportunities for
Sean and Garret up top.
Altogether, the Firecrackers showed up
to play, and fought hard. The Firecrackers have already clinched a
spot in the playoffs, and will most likely face Deportivo Agave once
again in the first round. Please believe there will be a different
outcome next time around, as the 'crackers will welcome back all the
missing players for next weeks game.
